The Secret to excellent Acting: It’s Not What You Think

As the Head of Movement at LAMDA, I have worked with immensely talented and dedicated actors. I have guided many through transformational journeys of realising that they can work “smarter”, not harder.

In the beginning I saw how hard actors work: They memorized their lines. They worked on their diction. They poured over scripts, dissecting actions, and perfecting delivery.

But something was missing.

The performances felt polished but not alive. Technically sound but not memorable.

And then it hit me.

The secret to good acting isn’t just in the head. It’s in the body.

Why the Body Matters

Here’s the thing about acting: it’s not just about what you say—it’s about how you are.

Your body carries the story just as much as your words do. Your posture, your breath, the way you move through space—all of it speaks volumes before you’ve even opened your mouth.

But too often, actors get stuck in their heads. They think their way through a scene instead of feeling their way through playing it. And when that happens, the magic disappears.

Great acting doesn’t come from thinking harder. It comes from connecting deeper.

Imagination Needs a Vessel

Imagination is a powerful tool. It’s where characters are born and stories take flight.

But imagination on its own isn’t enough. It needs a vessel—a body that’s open, responsive, and alive.

When your body is stiff or disconnected, your imagination can’t fully come to life. But when your body is free, your imagination can flow effortlessly, creating performances that are dynamic, authentic, and unforgettable.

Movement as the Missing Link

At LAMDA, I started to see the pattern. The actors who connected to their bodies through movement unlocked something extraordinary.

Movement wasn’t just an exercise; it was a practice. A way of grounding themselves in the present moment. A way of accessing emotions that words couldn’t reach.

Through movement, they found their characters—not by thinking about them, but by feeling them.

And that’s when the performances came alive.

The Practice of Connection

The truth is, great acting isn’t about technique alone. It’s about connection.

Connection to your body.

Connection to your imagination.

Connection to the moment.

When you practice connecting to your body through movement, you create a bridge between your inner world and your outer expression. You stop performing and start being.

And that’s when the audience leans in. That’s when they feel something real.
